Hi Reader!
This past weekend was full of adventures and pivots, starting with taking a photo I never expected to take... on my direct flight to Seattle...
Uncommon snow and poor visibility in Seattle caused a ground stop and since our plane didn't have enough fuel to circle, we diverted to Boise for a few hours.
I noticed a couple things as several flights of diverted travelers clogged the terminal.
1) Even the workers were surprised at this spike in traffic
2) Everyone was seeming to be in pretty good spirits about the whole thing
And the ripple effects-
When we got back on the plane, one of my seatmates commented how the bartender was excited to have it be busy, bringing in some much needed tips.
And listening to people on their phones as we congregated by the gate, overhearing parts of the stories they were telling their friends.
Ones that sounded like this was a weird, cool thing rather than being disgruntled about how this was ruining their trip, even when it meant they would likely have to spend the night in Seattle because the mountain pass was closed and couldn't drive home.
Life is series of stories we string together, affecting our orientation.
And when we choose the version of the story we tell ourselves about what's happening, the ripple effects have a way of magnifying in the direction they head.
Want to explore how stories affect your trajectory? The Story Shift teaches you how to notice them in your own life while reading how the main character in your next book read navigates theirs.
Your Adventure of the Week
What stories are you telling yourself?
Last week we talked about physical and sensory pattern changes that happened because of the time change, and this is more of a focus on mental and emotional ones.
When you pause and reframe the lens that you are letting your life run through, you can make the shift from feeling like life is happening TO you and more like like is happening FOR you.
This isn't to force optimism or always be positive, but it is a good tool to help navigate the inevitable diversions that can happen when unexpected 'weather' hits.
Ask yourself-
- What stories are you telling yourself?
- How can you see something through a different lens and notice how it shifts the trajectory?
- How do other people's stories affect yours?
- Where does your Glow need some support to help navigate these stories and adjustments?
Imagine the ripple effects of making a small adjustment in how you see a situation so that you have the perspective of it working more for you, than against you. (Or that maybe it's not even about you)
Reader, my trip had several story reframe opportunities (including waking up Monday morning to see that my homebound flight was cancelled) and this reminder really helped me keep things in perspective, even as I walked in the door after midnight.
And today I'm focusing on what my Glow needs to replenish the many drained facets.
Here's to better stories,
p.s. my Story Shift guide teaches you how to spot these story moments in your own life through your favorite reads.
