This week we had a moment where my kiddo's energy management system went absolutely kerflooey.
With back to school and family birthday celebrations, our energy has been struggling to adjust to the new rhythms, excitement and drains.
Pairing that with an almost 11-year old who can be really hard on himself and push himself beyond his capacity to handle 'all the things' he had a moment where it was like the springs just blew out of his head during a game of backyard baseball after dinner.
As I sat with him to help him regulate his energy again, I tripped his circuits again and he kept declaring that he was 'fine, absolutely fine' then start to ramp up his feelings.
It was evident that things were absolutely not 'fine' and he wasn't able to name what he was really feeling, but in that moment he was sticking to the story that things were 'fine'.
Sticking to Your Story
Have you ever told a lie?
And then you start to get caught in it... and the only way out seems to be doubling down and pushing yourself to believe it as much as you are trying to convince others to avoid facing the truth?
For my kiddo in that moment, telling one of the biggest whoppers that have ever been told in Bear Country was less scary than taking a breath and acknowledging that he was tired, his patience was thin and that he had done the best with the capacity he had.

Using the signature moves of the Glow Compass, I helped steer the conversation to Notice and Appreciate things that had gone well about how he played and support him in a few moments of Pauses so that we could Transition into getting ready for bed.
Having the Glow Compass framework has been so helpful in helping me notice where we're 'at' with our feelings and the direction they are heading so that we don't stick ourselves to a story that isn't serving us.
